Open Science & Preparedness for COVID-19 and Other Infectious Diseases

1 December 2021

The global COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for rapid and open data exchange to accelerate scientific research. To address this, the European Commission and EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), together with EU Member States and partners such as ELIXIR, have created and now manage the European COVID-19 Data Platform.

Whilst the initial focus of the COVID-19 Data Platform was on making genomic data available, this is now shifting to linking genetic sequence data to societal, epidemiological, clinical, ... data. This event seeks to demonstrate the developments, both at a national and European level, that enable the interoperability of these diverse datasets.

Furthermore, it will map challenges and potential bottlenecks for the further implementation of the European COVID-19 Data Platform in order to be better prepared for outbreaks of other infectious diseases. This event is intended for the institutes and laboratories that generate data on infectious diseases.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Konstantinos Repanas - Policy Officer at the European Commission – Open Science & European open science cloud
  • Guy Cochrane - Head of the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) at EMBL's European Bioinformatics Institute
  • Frederik Coppens - Head of Node at ELIXIR Belgium
