Dirk Valkenborg

Group leader @ Center for Statistics - University of Hasselt

The Center for Statistics (CenStat) is internationally renowned and is strongly committed to provide multi-angle integrated methodological support in all aspect of data science and applies its expertise in mathematical and statistical models and methods relevant to the particular research area. In this context, the transition towards high-throughput data technology to address biological questions was a main driver to extend the expertise at CenStat, in a natural way, to the bioinformatics domain. Specialized methodologies are conceived to operate in the framework of rigorous hypothesis-testing rather than hypothesis-generation. In other words, methods that explore large scale data structures are translated to address targeted questions. Important research tools are situated in the field of biclustered data, longitudinal data, missing data, clinical trials, surrogate markers, contact pattern models, network models. Because of this perspective CenStat has strong ties with academia and industry. Many of the developed methodologies are set to work in pharmaceutical industries to support, e.g., compound screening, etc. More recently, the focus shifted to informatics and data science in the field of genomics, proteomics and metabolomics with strong expertise in mass spectrometry-based signal processing and next-generation sequencer data analysis.
